The right artwork can quickly transform a plain blank wall into an eye-catching focal point in your home or office. However, picking the correct size artwork is the key to making it visually appealing without over or underwhelming the space. There are so many options it can often be difficult to decide what size to order. Using our guidelines below you can feel confident that the art you choose will strike the right balance between the art and the room itself.
For a wall where you want to add one large signature piece, the print should be about 60% to 75% of the width of the furniture below it. For example, if your sofa is 84” wide. Your artwork should be between 47” and 63” wide. The center of the piece should be approximately 58” off the floor, giving optimal viewing height. The bottom of the piece should be 6” to 12” above the sofa to give the art room to breathe. Less than this, it can start to feel crowded, and the furniture competes with the art.
If you want to make a collection of several prints they should be arranged in the same space as one large piece. The center of the collection should be approximately 58” off the floor and the lowest piece should be 6 to 12” above the furniture.
Vertical pieces are a good choice if you want to bring attention to a tall focal point or create a sense of height above a short piece of furniture. A horizontal collection of pieces can accentuate a long piece of furniture like a table. Adding in some diagonal lines and spacing can add movement to the collection. When doing a collection of pieces make sure the art sizes are adequate for the image. Smaller print sizes should be reserved for simpler images. A busy or detailed piece of art loses its impact when it is viewed from too far away. Leave at least 1” between pieces to avoid them looking too crowded.
Have a big wall – go big or go home! In general, bigger is always better. Still not sure. Create a mockup on your wall with some blank paper and painter’s tape. This will help you visualize how the art will fit in the space, and you can play with different sizes before you order.
